Trekking in Salento
The most beautiful trails among cliffs, scrubland and bays
Salento confirms itself as a perfect destination for slow trekking : well-marked historic paths, spectacular coastal trails and natural parks where the shade of the pine trees alternates with the blue of the sea.
Here, walking isn't just a sport: it's a way to experience the landscape step by step, amid prehistoric caves, watchtowers, and the scents of the Mediterranean scrub.
Below you will find the most scenic and diverse routes , ideal for building a walking itinerary (even in short stages).
1) Cipolliane Trail (Gagliano del Capo): the “Blue Trail” of Salento
It is one of the most exciting stretches of the Adriatic coast of Salento: a path halfway up the hill that connects the Novaglie marina to the famous Ciolo Bridge , suspended between rock and sea.
Why is it special?
Useful data
Difficulty: Hiking (E)
Length: approximately 2.5 km (one way)
Tip: It's best to do this early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid heat and backlighting.
2) Salento Trail (Sea Route / Village Route): the great walking journey to Leuca
The Cammino del Salento has become one of the most beautiful ways to slowly cross the Salento peninsula: it starts from Lecce and arrives at the Sanctuary of Lecce (De Finibus Terrae), with two main variants (coast and villages).
Recommended route (scenic and accessible) From Otranto to Porto Badisco , one of the most evocative segments of the area for its landscape and “mythology”.
What do you see along this stretch?
3) Porto Selvaggio Natural Park (Nardò): pine forest, bays and archaeology
On the Ionian coast, Porto Selvaggio is a classic that never disappoints: an easy but very rewarding trek through pine forests and coves.
The most popular route From the access area (Villa Tafuri area) you descend towards the bay and then you can continue towards the Torre dell'Alto, with splendid panoramic points.
Curiosity The park touches (or grazes, depending on the routes) areas of great prehistoric interest such as the Grotta del Cavallo, important for studies on ancient human settlements in this part of Europe.
Useful data
Difficulty: Tourist/Easy (T)
Suitable for: families and inexperienced walkers (just be careful of the heat and slippery rocks near the sea).
4) The Isola di Sant'Andrea Regional Natural Park and Punta Pizzo Coast is one of the most beautiful "regenerating" treks near Gallipoli
It's perfect if you're looking for a flat walk, scented by Mediterranean scrub, with continuous views of the Ionian Sea.
Punta Pizzo: walking between the scrub and the sea
The coastal trail winds through dirt roads, low rocks, and sandy stretches. It's a flexible itinerary: you can choose a shorter version or extend it with detours and scenic spots.
What makes this park special
Best time: May–June (flowers and climate) and September (warm sea, lighter air). Avoid the midday hours of July and August.
Tracks and maps : it is useful to download GPX and/or use apps like Komoot (many Salento trails are well mapped).
Minimum equipment : shoes with good soles (the limestone rock can be sharp), hat, sunscreen, plenty of water.
Shade is scarce on the coasts : leave early and always bring more water than you think you'll need.
